BISCOE - After Week 1, the Buckin’ Elks have already tied their win total from all of 2011.
Elkin jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter and held on for the thrilling 24-19 win over East Montgomery in a rain-soaked Biscoe.
After rain delayed the start of the game, Kody King gave the Elks their first lead of the game with a touchdown run, while Jamiles Hayes answered an Eagles score when he returned the ensuing kickoff to the endzone.
Trailing 17-7 at the break, East took the first possession of the second half down the field to cut the lead to 17-13. After a three-and-out, the Eagles looked poised to take the lead after driving deep into Elkin territory.
But sophomore defensive back Daniel Brinegar picked off a pass in the endzone to end the scoring threat as Elkin forced nine turnovers on the night.
Second-year quarterback Josh Strickland responded, scoring on a 14-yard touchdown scamper to extend the lead to 24-13.
East marched down the field, aided by costly Elkin penalties, and cut the lead to 24-19 with little more than a minute left on the clock. But the Elks snuffed out a two-point conversion and recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the win.
Elkin returns to the field Friday night in Mount Airy against North Surry in a non-conference tilt. The Greyhounds topped Forbush 20-14 on opening night.
