Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital’s biannual Community Health Fair attracted both employees and members of the community throughout the day Tuesday.
An array of free screening services were offered at Tuesday’s Health Fair including screenings for blood pressure, body mass index, bone density, cholesterol/glucose, dyslexia, falls indicator, hearing, heart rate/O2 saturation, neck and back, pulmonary function, stroke, upper extremity and wound assessment.
The event was open to hospital staff and the public from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Among those in the community who decided to attend was Leslie Schlender, economic development director for the Town of Elkin.
Schlender completed a stroke screening with the help of registered nurse, Greg Allen.
“This is a very important screening, because if someone is at risk we can tell them the changes they may need to be making or whether they need to see their doctor,” Allen said.
Free dyslexia screenings were also being offered by Yadkin Valley Rotary Club in response to International Rotary’s mission for literacy.
“The dyslexia screenings have been really well attended, which is great because this is the first year it has been offered,” said Lori Gwyn, marketing director of Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital.
In addition to screenings and other tests, educational literature was available at each station with information pertaining to the screening being conducted at that particular station.
Attendees were also offered healthy snacks to dine on and pro-active give-aways such as hand sanitizer and SPF lip balm.
