The Elkin City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to promote Anthony Davis from assistant principal of Elkin Elementary to principal.

Davis is currently the assistant to retiring Principal Tom Caton.

Superintendent Dr. Randy Bledsoe read comments from unnamed sources describing Davis, but left his choice anonymous until the very end.

“This administrator has conducted himself with the confidence, maturity and professionalism of a veteran,” Dr. Bledsoe read. “He consistently presents a positive, encouraging and well-mannered leader to the staff. He projects a welcoming and open attitude. He maintains his focus to uphold the ultimate best interest of the school in every situation. Our students and parents respect and admire him for his friendly, fair and children-first mentality.”

As Dr. Bledsoe made his announcement to the crowd, board members looked at each other around the commissioners table quickly, smiled, then raised their hands in favor of promoting Davis to the head position of the school.

“I don’t have much to say other than I don’t deserve those kind words that’s for sure,” Davis said. “I thank you, Board, for the opportunity to be able to continue to serve Elkin City Schools. It’s been my privilege to have worked here and I hope to continue the excellence that Mr. Caton has been able to provide as the leader of Elkin Elementary School.”

The official swap of duties with Caton will come July 1 as the new fiscal year begins.

The decision comes two months after Principal Caton publicly announced his retirement.

“Mr. Davis has shown exceptional leadership skills since coming to Elkin City Schools,” Dr. Bledsoe said. “He has gained the support of the school staff, the parents in the community, and his students admire and respect him. Mr. Davis’ work with Mr. Tom Caton will make this transition very smooth, and with that, our students and teachers will continue to model excellence in the classroom each day.”

Chairman of the Board of Education Foley Norman said, “Mr. Davis has the support of the school staff and they are well pleased with his positive and encouraging leadership. The board and I feel he is a dedicated educational leader that well represents our school’s value of educational excellence in this community.”

Davis grew up in Yadkin County and attended Forbush High School. From there he attended Appalachian State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate in history/social studies for 6-12 grades.

Davis taught 13 years at Forbush High as a exceptional children’s teacher and social studies teacher. He also worked as athletic director.

He earned his master’s degree in school administration from High Point University.

His alma mater was there to help him celebrate Monday.

Members of the High Point University doctoral department attended to meet staff and administrators from Elkin City Schools. Dr. Vernon Farrington of the department of educational leadership offered his congratulations to Davis and posed for a picture.

Davis is married to Abby Davis, and they have two daughters - Hannah, 13, and Ainsley, 10.
