On Aug. 10, an exhibit highlighting the centennial of Girl Scouts will be opening at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History. The exhibit is called “Courage, Confidence and Character: 100 Years of Girl Scouts.”

Matt Edwards, executive director of the museum, said this exhibit will take the place of the White Liquor Dirt Tracks exhibit that opened in January. He said this exhibit highlights the last 100 years of Girl Scouting, both on a national and local level.

“Much like we did with the Boy Scouts with their centennial, we felt this was a great time to highlight the rich scouting tradition of this area. Surry County has a strong and steeped history in scouting, particularly in the 1950s and ’60s. Among other things, Surry County Girl Scouts were selected to attend international round-ups,” said Edwards.

The opening reception will be held on Aug. 10 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Normally the opening reception is reserved for museum members, but Edwards said all active Girl Scouts are welcome to attend the reception in uniform.

“We’ve been working with a number of local scout leaders and current scouts to provide objects for display. We have also worked closely with the National Girl Scout Museum in New York City,” said Edwards.

The museum will be the first to display a photograph of Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts International.

“It’s the first time it’s ever been published. They actually found the photo of her after they had done all of their centennial publications and planning. Nobody has ever seen this picture before. We are the first place to be able to show that off,” said Edwards. “That’s one of the things that I’m particularly excited about.”

He encouraged Girl Scouts to come out to see the exhibit.

“This is a great opportunity to learn about the history of the Girl Scouts,” said Edwards.

The exhibit will be on display on the third floor until January of 2013.
