ELKIN - Sertoma football kicked off in a big way Saturday with a jamboree at Elkin High School.

Teams from East Wilkes, West Wilkes, North Wilkes, Central Wilkes, Asheville, Alleghany and Elkin hit the field at Grissom Stadium and the Elks’ baseball field Saturday morning to begin the 2012 season.

The Junior Pee Wees got things started, battling each team in a full-contact scrimmage playing either offense or defense.

The Elks scored four touchdowns against North Wilkes, with running back Ty Parsons scoring twice on big runs down the left sideline. Quarterback Boone Beaver added two more scores on the ground.

Against Alleghany, Elkin added four more scores. Parsons found the endzone two more times, while Landon Jackson hauled in a touchdown pass.

In their final offensive possession, James Owings and Luke Slawter scored a rushing touchdown apiece against East Wilkes.

Defensively, the Junior Pee Wees battled West, Central and East Central.

The Pee Wees took the field next, scoring twice against North. Austin Longworth finished off a long drive with a touchdown run up the gut, while Shane Price found the endzone.

Against Alleghany, quarterback Eric Wiles hit Maston Renegar for a touchdown pass, with Tyjae Townsend adding another score.

In their final scrimmage, Elkin scored two more times with Longworth plowing in from the goal line and Wiles scoring on a bootleg down the left sideline.

Finally, the Midgets battled in offensive and defensive scrimmages.

Against East Wilkes, the Elks recovered two fumbles and picked off another pass on defense. But against a high-flying Central Wilkes team, Elkin was less opportunistic.

Offensively, the Elks moved the ball slowly against a stout Asheville team, but were unable to find the endzone.

The Sertoma season officially kicks off Saturday with all three East Wilkes clubs traveling back to Elkin for the opening weekend.
