Elkin Municipal Airport is underway with getting a $455,000 face lift.
The North Carolina Department of Transpiration-Division of Aviation awarded the airport with the grant funding this past summer, and at Monday’s Town Hall Meeting, the board adopted a resolution that the town will pay a 90:10 split to afford the construction.
“The resolution we adopted says the state will give us 90 percent for airport improvements and the Town had to verify that we have 10 percent that we’re going to put toward this for the completion of all the projects we have planned,” said George Crater, Elkin Airport Manager and Town Planning Director.
The Town’s matching 10 percent of the grant will total approximately $50,000.

Right now, the airport houses 17 planes in box hangars, which is a large building that several planes are backing into, he said. The T-Hangar sits one plane a hangar. The land around the airport has already been cleared and graded to prepare for the T-Hangars and runway, Crater said.
Crater said they are planning on also repainting and doing other maintenance work.
“We also received grant money to re-do all the lighting throughout the entire airport,” Crater said. “We’ve got it all in good working order, but it’s like anything, when they put it in the lighting years ago, the requirement was four lights at the end of the runway and now the requirement is six.”
Crater said a great deal of work has already been done on the hangars and the runway expansion.
“There has already been a tremendous amount of Earth moving and the project is targeted to be completed by January,” Crater said.
