Clicking knitting needles and laughter are heard in the Jonesville Senior Center on Wednesday afternoons.
Starting in December 2010, a group gets together every week to knit prayer shawls.
“We have knitted 835 prayer shawls since we have started,” said Lisa Money who started the group.
The shawls they send out always come back with a story.
“We hear a lot of stories about the shawls,” Money said. “One man with cancer had a shawl, and his wife kept it and wore it after he died to remember him.”
One of the newcomers to the group, Helen Anderson, recently completed one of the group’s biggest projects.
Made for a raffle, Anderson crocheted 93 inches by 88 inches bedspread made of tobacco twine. The money raised from the raffle will go towards yarn to knit more prayer shawls.
“I was invited to the knitting group, but I prefer crocheting more. I call it my occupational therapy,” Anderson laughed. “It took me about four months to make the blanket.”
Anderson, born and raised in Elkin, has been crocheting for the past 30 years and has donated her work to several different charities. Over the years she has helped raise money for the Hugh Chatham Women’s Auxiliary, cancer research or roof repairs for the Yadkin County Senior Center in May.
“I like crocheting better than knitting,” she said. “Crotchet is a lot more portable than knitting. I can stick it in my purse or pocket a lot easier.”
Purchase of raffle tickets will begin today, Monday, June 18, and will end on December 11.
“I think everyone should have something like knitting to or crocheting to do when they are older,” Anderson said.
