Elkin City Schools named Tom Caton Principal of the Year for 2012-2013.
Caton has served as the principal at Elkin Elementary School since 2005. Caton graduated from Elkin High School in 1971, and after graduation enrolled in the U.S. Marines, where is served as a Field Medic at Camp Lejuene.
Caton earned his B.A. in History from Lenior-Rhyne, his B.S. in Social Science and Education from Appalachian State and his Masters in School Administration from Gardner-Webb.
Caton began his career with Elkin City Schools in 1990 as a teacher at Elkin High School. Caton has one daughter, Katie who graduated from Elkin High School in 2010 and is currently living in Raleigh.
A Wolf Pack fan for life, Catons’ enthusiasm, dedication, and excellent work ethic can be felt throughout Elkin Elementary School. Caton is a role model to the staff and more importantly to the students.
His love of reading is well known throughout the school community and it is not uncommon for him to start a meeting with “So what are you reading today?” Caton said he is “currently reading “The Cove” by Ron Rash, a North Carolina author.”
“Mr. Caton continues to encourage students and staff each day,” said Dr. Randy Bledsoe, superintendent of Elkin City Schools. “Noted as a School of Excellence by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, Elkin Elementary School continues to be a model elementary school in academic achievement. I am glad to have Caton in this leadership role as he motivates each of us to “do our best each day!”
