ELKIN - The baseball and softball playoffs kicked off Friday night around the state.

Baseball

Elkin 3, Thomas Jefferson Academy 1

The Buckin’ Elks picked up the area’s lone baseball victory in the first round after upsetting Thomas Jefferson Academy 3-1 in Mooresboro.

Logan Newman put the finishing touches on the win in the sixth, ripping a RBI double to score freshman Tanner Edwards to punch Elkin’s ticket into the second round for the second straight season.

The Elks will play the winner of the Alleghany-Bishop McGuinness matchup, that was rained out Friday night, in the next round.

Salisbury 7, Starmount 1

Salisbury struck early and often en route to a 7-1 victory over the Rams.

Despite picking up hits from seven different players, Starmount only managed one run in the game - a RBI single off the bat of senior Tanner Mathis.

Starmount finishes the season with an 8-16 mark.

Trinity 9, Forbush 3

A eight-run sixth inning doomed Forbush in its first-round matchup in East Bend against Trinity.

Leading 3-1 heading to the sixth, the wheels fell off for the Falcons as Trinity struck for eight runs to grab a 9-3 advantage to stun Forbush in front of its home crowd.

The Falcons end the year at 14-9.

East Surry 10, East Wilkes 0

The Northwest Conference champs won the all-Cardinal showdown in Pilot Mountain.

East Surry struck for seven runs in the seventh to blow out East Wilkes and advance to the second round.

East Wilkes finishes the year with a 7-14.

Softball

Elkin 11, Avery County 8

In a banner year, the Lady Elks earned their biggest victory of the season, upsetting Avery County 11-8 in the opening round.

Elkin advances to face Smoky Mountain champion Hayesville in the second round.

East Wilkes 2, Lincoln Charter 1

Ashley Wagoner ripped a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth to give East Wilkes a thrilling 2-1 victory over 21-1 Lincoln Charter in the first round.

Kennedy Lester dazzled for eight innings to pick up the win for the Lady Cards.

East Wilkes awaits the winner of the Mitchell-Cherokee matchup in the second round.

Forbush 18, Salisbury 0

The Lady Falcons were clicking on all cylinders in the first round, blowing out Salisbury 18-0 in five innings.

Forbush racked up 20 hits on the afternoon to punch its ticket into the next round.

The Falcons will play Piedmont, who upset previously undefeated Wheatmore 1-0 in its first-round game, in the second round.
