North Elkin Drive closure to be discussed Monday
by Jessica Pickens
Staff Writer

The possible road closure of North Elkin Drive will again be discussed at Monday night’s Town of Elkin meeting.

“The Town Planning Board has discussed the issue, and it is again coming before the commissioners,” said Town Planning Director George Crater. “The petitioners have submitted an alternative route. We may be voting on a final decision Monday night.”

Members of Elkin Valley Baptist Church originally brought a petition before the town in 2009, requesting to close the North Elkin Drive, which runs through the middle of their church campus.

The discussion died in 2009 when no commissioner made a motion to move forward with a public hearing.

The church again brought the petition before the town planning board and commissioners in March, proposing closing 500 feet of North Elkin Drive for the safety of its church members and expansion of the church.

Elkin Valley Baptist members and people in the North Elkin community voiced opinions at a public hearing on May 14, 2012. In May, commissioners and the town planning board both tabled the discussion for 90 day do more research on alternative solutions rather than closing the road.

“We felt we needed more time to go over all of the issues,” Town Planning Board Chair Robin Smith said in May. “We didn’t want to slam the door on the decision. We want to allow the church to accomplish their goals, but we had several people opposed to the closure.”

The North Elkin Drive issue is an agenda item at the Town of Elkin meeting on Monday, but is not a public hearing, said Crater said.

“We have already had a public hearing, and will not be having another one,” Crater said.

The Town of Elkin Board of Commissioners meeting will begin is at 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at the Elkin Town Hall. For more information contact 835-9800.
