C.B. Eller Elementary School took a different approach to its pageant when it hosted its inaugural Grandma Beauty Pageant.
PTA president Amy Samples and students organized the event to show grandparents that they were appreciated.
“We have so much to learn from prior generations, but most importantly this pageant was able to teach children that beauty is from within,” said Samples.
The contestants competed in three categories: dress, talent and interview.
Each grandmother was escorted onto the stage by her grandchildren, exhibiting their pose, grace, and best pageant wave. The contestants individually performed a variety of talents from singing, dancing, knitting, piano playing, and quilting.
Grandmothers’ ages ranged from 45 to 91 years of age.
Mrs. Janette Crump was crowned Mrs. C.B. Eller Grandma 2012 and was awarded a half dozen rose bouquet from Ratledge Florist and a $25 gift card from Dodge City Steakhouse.
All contestants were awarded prizes from sponsors: Aladdin’s Hallmark, Belk, Little Richard’s BBQ, Mazzini’s Restaurant, North Elkin Tire, Designing Minds Salon, and Watson’s Florist.
The judges for the evening were: Mr. Tim Adams, Mrs. Susan Campbell, Mr. and Mrs. Randall (Rudy) Holbrook, and Mrs. Elizabeth Jester.
The event MC was Mr. Hank Campbell.
The contestants were: Shonnie Thompson, Tracey Russell, Barbara Poplin, Amber Dickerson, Barbara Whitford, Janette Crump, and Annie Lou Swaim.
Samples said that her inspiration on forming a pageant for the elderly was from a national television show that featured a similar event.
Samples stated that it was the students who pulled this together from the beginning and that they loved the idea of recognizing their own.
“Students recruited grandparents not only because they knew they’re beautiful, but they have deep respect and appreciation for them,” said Samples.
