Ronda held a park celebration Saturday with several members of the board of commissioners and Mayor Victor Varela in attendance.
The hot dog cookout ran from noon till 3 p.m., although the weather almost dealt the town a soggy event.
In attendance was newly crowned Miss Wheelchair North Carolina 2013, Ashley Macemore of Ronda. Just before Ashley Macemore turned 16, she was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia, an autosomal recessive genetic disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system, resulting in symptoms ranging from gait disturbance to speech problems.
Macemore is raising money for Nationals in Houston, Texas. The expenses are upwards of $2,500, with $1,850 going to the pageant alone.
The contest is not a beauty pageant, but a competition to see who can speak on behalf of others with disabilities the best.
Ashley is asking for donations to help make her trip possible. Visit giveforward.com/fundraiser/rt72/mwnc2013.
