DOBSON — An armed robbery suspect from Virginia is being held under a $125,000 secured bond after his apprehension Thursday in Surry County, which involved a deputy being injured.
Jeffrey Alan Boggs, 22, of Midland, Va., was arrested after a foot chase Thursday in the Elkin area.
Sheriff Graham Atkinson said officers were called there in regard to a suspicious vehicle pulling in and out of driveways in the vicinity of Mulberry Church Road.
A deputy who responded initially located a woman standing on the edge of the roadway who informed him that she was waiting on a friend and he had mistakenly driven past her home. The deputy then located the vehicle further down the road with a man inside.
The driver of the pickup told the deputy he was from Virginia and was looking for his friend. He also gave his name as Travis Boggs. However, a check of the tag on the vehicle revealed that the truck was registered to Jeffrey Alan Boggs, who was wanted for armed robbery.
When the driver said he was using his cousin’s pickup, and had no identification, the officers asked him to ride back to the residence where the woman was to see if she would verify his identity.
“One deputy stayed with Mr. Boggs while another went and asked the woman who he was,” said Atkinson. “She said that her friend was Jeffrey Boggs and that he was the one who drove the truck.”
When the deputy returned to place Boggs under arrest, he began to struggle and broke free of the officers and ran. During the struggle, one of the deputies, Josh Wiles, fell and injured his knee, but the second deputy pursued him on foot. Boggs fled into the woods and other officers arrived to aid in the search.
Assisted by a police dog handler from the N.C. Department of Correction, officers searched the area for about four hours before locating Boggs in a van near the woman’s house.
He was arrested on a fugitive warrant from Virginia for armed robbery. Boggs also is charged with felony assault on a law enforcement officer; resisting, obstructing or delaying a public officer; and damage to property.
