The prospect for more wintry weather this weekend has forced the cancellation of the 1A/2A swimming regionals in Huntersville.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association made the announcement on Thursday morning.

The meet was set for Friday morning and early afternoon, with the top 12 finishers in each event earning berths into next weekend's state championships. Now, all regional automatic qualifiers will advance to the state meet.

The list of all qualifiers will be released next week by the NCHSAA.

The threat of ice, sleet and snow also has forced the cancellation of the Northwest 1A/2A Conference wrestling tournament, which was slated for Saturday at South Stokes.

As of early Thursday afternoon, every other sporting event set for this weekend is still on as scheduled. Wrestling coaches from the Mountain Valley 1A/2A planned to decide on their conference tournament Friday afternoon. The tourney is currently scheduled for Saturday at East Wilkes High.

Obviously, if winter weather does move in, a number of games and events could be moved to next week or canceled altogether. Several basketball teams from the Northwest 1A/2A and MVAC have games scheduled for Saturday, trying to make up for last week's snowstorm. Forbush and Starmount Middle also are slated to play hoops Saturday in Boonville.

A pair of rivalry basketball games will take place tonight (Thursday). East Wilkes will host Elkin and Forbush will host Starmount. The Forbush-Starmount girls game has been designated a "Pink Game" with proceeds being donated to a cancer fighting/awareness charity in honor of Starmount grad Meme Brown.

The Forbush-Starmount hoops quadruple header will tip off at 3:30 p.m. with the JV girls game, followed by JV boys, varsity girls and then varsity boys.
