The show must go on, but not without the help of Jonathan Young.

The 17-year-old Elkin High School senior has been doing the lights and sound at Dixon Auditorium for as long as he can remember.

“I’ve probably been doing it since I could walk,” he said. “My dad used to do the lights and sound with George Brown and I would go with him and help.”

Young’s father, Frank Young, and George Brown previously ran a DJ company, Two Young DJs. Now Brown has left and Jonathan Young has stepped up to help run the company.

“Now it’s just me and my dad,” he said. “January of 2010 is when we took over.”

The father-son duo provide music and lights for school and private events such as weddings and parties.

Young said in his time doing lights and sound at Dixon Auditorium, he has probably helped out with 60 to 70 performances.

“It’s too many to know the exact number, but it’s a lot,” he said.

He has helped with summer theater, school plays, class plays, dance recitals and other events that are put on at Elkin High School.

“I really enjoy being able to do it because you get to meet new people and you get to see the finished product,” Young said. “You get to see how much work is put into a performance and how it turns out.”

When Young is not busy running the shows at Dixon Auditorium, he keeps a pretty full schedule of school, marching band, clubs and volunteer work.

“I volunteer at the Elementary School installing new computer systems, smart boards and projects,” he said.

He also currently volunteers at Yadkin County Senior Center conducting health care checks and assisting with meals and volunteers at CC Camp Volunteer Fire Department.

“If I’m not busy, I’m not happy,” he said.

Young plans to attend Surry Community College next year and hopes to eventually transfer to Surry Community College to pursue a career in broadcast engineering or electronics engineering.

“This is definitely something I will always want to do,” Young said.
