Small Engine Mechanic Class
Surry Community College will offer a Small Engine Mechanic class beginning January 9 and ending May 7. The course is designed to provide the student with hands-on knowledge of engine rebuilding techniques, according to the college.
Student taking the class will learn how to completely disassemble engines and check for manufacturer’s specifications and reassemble with an emphasis placed on proper use of specialized tools and testing equipment.
Upon completion, students will be able to explain the operating principles of engines, identify major parts of engines, work safely in the shop environment, explain the relationship of force work and torque to horsepower, explain combustion chamber designs, properly run rack, time injectors, and adjust values and governors.
Small engine repair skills are applicable to industrial maintenance, farm operation, and household projects.
The class will meet on Monday and Thursday nights from 6:30pm to 9:30pm on the main campus in Dobson. Tuition is $178. North Carolina residents age 65 and older will only pay $3. Try Welding
Surry Community College will also offer a welding course beginning Monday, February 4. The class will meet Monday through Wednesday from 8am to 12 noon, February 4 to June 26 on the main campus in Dobson. The class will cover the three main welding processes: SMAW (Stick), GMAW (MIG), and GTAW (TIG). Training for each process will be approximately seven weeks with additional training in Oxy-Acetylene and Plasma plate cutting safety.
Welding can be the main focus in a job or can be a supplemental skill that companies look for when hiring. Welder’s salary range is from $12-$15/hour to over $30/hour.
Tuition and fees are $178. NC residents age 65 and older are tuition waived. Registration and payment of tuition is required prior to the first day of class and online registration is now available. This class is limited to 12 students.
