Elkin registering for spring youth sports till Feb. 24Registration for town of Elkin spring baseball, softball and soccer will continue until Feb. 24.
Players can be registered at the Elkin Recreation Center.
• Cal Ripken Baseball: Youth baseball program for 9-12 year olds. Age as of April 30, 2010. Participants must attend Elkin City Schools or reside in Wilkes or Yadkin counties. Registration is limited and is first come, first serve.
Cost: $55 for Elkin residents, $75 for non-residents.
• Fast Pitch Softball: Youth softball program for girls 9-13 years old. Age as of Jan. 1, 2010. Registration is limited and is first come, first serve.
Cost: $30 for Elkin residents; $60 for non-residents.
• Youth Soccer: Program for 4-13 year olds. Age as of Aug. 31, 2009.
Cost: $30 for Elkin residents; $45 for non-residents
• Run and Kick Soccer Clinic: Soccer clinic for 3 and 4 year olds. Age as of Aug. 31, 2009. Registration is limited and is first come, first serve.
Cost: $15 for Elkin residents; $20 for non-residents.
Sports media roundtable in SalisburyCincinnati Reds’ play-by-play announcer Marty Brennaman will be joined by the play-by-play voices of the Carolina Panthers and Wake Forest Demon Deacons and Salisbury radio personality Howard Platt for a sports media roundtable discussion at Salisbury High School on Friday, Feb. 12 from 4-5 p.m.
The roundtable is part of a media outreach program sponsored by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and is free and open to the public.
Brennaman is an NSSA Hall of Famer who recently won his 15th NSSA Ohio Sportscaster of the Year Award (he also won four in Virginia).
He’ll be joined by Mick Mixon, the Panthers’ play-by-play announcer, who recently won his fourth NSSA North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year Award and by Stan Cotten, who as the play-by-play announcer for Wake Forest football and basketball has won two NSSA North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year Awards.
Platt, the 2003 NSSA North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year, has been a fixture as a morning personality and play-by-play announcer at WSTP-AM in Salisbury. NSSA Executive Director Dave Goren will serve as moderator.

Teams needed for AAU hoops tourney in GalaxThe Twin County Boys AAU organization will hold a boys AAU basketball tournament on Feb. 27-28 at Galax (Va.) High School and Galax Middle.
Registration is limited to the first eight teams in each age group.
