Pocket Full of Poises illustration exhibit makes its way to the Foothills Art Council from January 11th through February 22.

Pocketful of Posies, a traveling exhibit on the works of nationally known Salley Mavor, is coming to the Foothills Arts Council.
The exhibit will be held in its gallery from Jan. 11 through Feb. 22.
Pocketful of Posies, A Treasury of Nursery Rhymes is a 72-page, full-color, hardcover edition, illustrated in fabric relief by Mavor and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Pocketful of Posies has won the 2011 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Picture Book and the Golden Kite Award for picture book illustration from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
The Foothills Art Council exhibit took some creative planning, but it was the outreach of a Foothills Art Council volunteer to Mavor that helped make it happen.
“This show is Anne Gulley’s baby,” said it’s executive director Leighanne Martin Wright when speaking of the volunteer who helped score the exhibit locally. “She is the one behind getting it here.”
“My exhibit is coming to Elkin because Anne Gulley found out about the tour from my blog and approached me about having the show come to the Foothills Arts Council,” said Mavor to The Tribune. “I wanted my work to be shown in the south and the Council was willing to host the exhibit, so we set it up about a year ago. I am delighted that my original artwork will be seen up close and personal by folks in the Foothills region.”
According to the arts council, Salley Mavor’s work is decorative and detailed, full of patterns and creative objects, all sewn together by hand with a needle and thread. The original fabric relief sculptures have been photographed and used to illustrate 10 children’s books.
“The show is an opportunity to see the detail, texture and sculptural quality of the artwork as a series, before the individual pieces are sold and separated,” said an enthused Mavor. “The 3-dimensional stitched pictures resemble miniature, shallow stage sets, with scenery, props and characters telling a story.”
Ms Mavor spent 3 years hand-stitching the illustrations, combining needlework, wool felt and incorporated objects from nature such as acorn caps, shells and driftwood.
Mavor works in her home studio on Cape Cod, in Falmouth, Massachusetts.
Teachers are encouraged to arrange field trips to visit during school hours, noted the Foothills Art Council. A scavenger hunt will be available for the students to make the exhibit even more interactive. Officials are scheduling classes in one-hour time slots.
The gallery opening reception will be from 6:30-8:30 on Friday, Jan. 11 with wine from Grassy Creek Winery and refreshments.
