Corey Campbell of Boonville and Brianna Fulp of Ronda were the top Tribune-area finishers in this past weekend’s Mount Airy Junior Futures tennis tournament.

Campbell, a rising senior at Starmount High School, won the Boys 18 singles title. He beat top-seeded David Hill of Winston-Salem in the final 6-2, 6-2. Campbell topped John Shields of Winston in the semifinals 6-1, 6-0.

Campbell won the Mountain Valley 2A singles championship in the spring high school season and earned a state berth.

Fulp, a state champion doubles player for East Wilkes High in 2008, won both of her round-robin matches in the Girls 18 division over the weekend.

She beat Yadkinville’s Carla Cave — the MVAC’s girls singles champion from Starmount last fall — by a 6-4, 6-0 score. Fulp was beating Emily Tucker of Lawsonville 4-1, when Tucker withdrew due to injury.

Cave won her match against Tucker by default.

Tyler Macy and Ryan Macy, both of Jonesville, finished as runners-up in the Boys 16 and Boys 10 divisions, respectively.

Tyler Macy beat Marshall Marcela of Huntersville in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-0 and then topped second-seeded Lucas Shelton of Pinnacle 6-3, 6-0 in the semis. Matthew Kessler, a standout player for Mount Airy High, beat Macy in the championship match 6-3, 6-0.

Ryan Macy, the No. 1 seed for the Boys 10 bracket, won his opener over Benjamin Williams of Winston-Salem 6-0, 6-4 before being topped by Matthew Thomson of Winston 6-4, 6-3 in the title match.

Jessica Taylor of Elkin rebounded after losing her opener in the Girls 16 division to win a pair of consolation duels. Taylor, part of East Wilkes’ state championship girls team last fall, beat Taylor Casey of Dobson 6-3, 6-1 and Cana Rierson of Danbury 6-1, 6-1.

Alexander Fowler of Dobson also bounced back well after dropping his first match in the Boys 14 bracket. Fowler, the division’s top seed, beat Jack Austin of Raleigh in a hard-fought 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 match.

Fowler then lost to Richard Boone of Mint Hill 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 in another hotly contested match for the consolation championship.

Andrew Peterson of State Road (Boys 14), Karli Bullins of Thurmond (Girls 12) and Casey of Dobson (Girls 16) each went 0-2 in their respective divisions.

Bullins lost a close quarterfinal match, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), to India Inman of Martinsville, Va.

Peterson battled hard in both of his matches, pushing his consolation quarterfinal foe, Boone, to a third-set tie-breaker before falling. Peterson pushed eventual division champion Chase Waddell of Flatwoods, Ken. to a tiebreaker in the first set of his opening round match, eventually falling 7-6 (7-4), 6-0.
