Elkin’s Annika Winebarger and Mary Frances Hall finished in the top 15 at the 2A/1A Women’s Golf State Championships last week in Firefox Village.
FOXFIRE VILLAGE - Elkin’s Mary Frances Hall and Annika Winebarger turned in top-15 finishes at the 2A/1A Women’s Golf State Championships last week at the West Course at the Foxfire Resort and Golf Club in Foxfire Village.
Hall shot a 76 on the first day of competition to pull within one shot of the leader, Isabella Rusher of Salisbury. But Hall’s second-round 86 dropped her to fourth overall with a combined score of 162 for the championship.
Winebarger shot a 91 on the first day before firing a 90 on day two to finish in 14th place with a combined score of 181.
The duo’s score powered the Lady Elks to an 8th-place team finish in the state with a combined score of 597.
Rusher, the defending champion, fired the only par round of the tournament on the second day to pull away and win the individual title.
North Surry’s Kasey Tolbert shot two rounds 79 to capture the silver medal, eight strokes behind Rusher. Another Salisbury golfer, Grace Yatawara, finished third at 161, 15 shots out of first.
Other notable area golfers include, Madison Moore (East Surry - 169), Gatlin Hiatt (North Surry - 188), Lindsey Chamblin (East Surry - 203), Sarah Holleman (North Surry - 214) and Kaley Cornelison (Elkin - 254).
The course was set at par 71 and a 5,765-yard layout for the championship.
Defending champion Salisbury blew the field away, winning by an incredible 60 strokes for their second-straight title. Hendersonville finished second at 550, with North Surry and Newport Croatan finishing tied for third at 560.
The best three scores of a team counted toward the team totals. A total of 13 teams and 78 golfers competed in the event, the 10th year that the sport has been classified. It was the second year that three separate championships have been held and the 32nd year for state championship competition in the sport.
