Dr. Gil Kingman of the Forsyth Plastic Surgery office spoke Wednesday at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Kingman introduced himself and then introduced what real plastic surgery was to the packed meeting room.

Kingman told how “plastic” surgery, commonly misunderstood as containing plastic, was actually drawn from the Greek plastikos, meaning “to mold.”

Kingman explained what procedures the practice offered and explained what was involved with each procedure to aid people in making a decision about their own appearance.

Citing the trend of many aging plastic surgeons who refuse necessary surgeries in favor of cosmetic and easier cases, Kingman told the room that he took all cases. He said that he was as much in practice for those patients who needed the surgery as for the ones who wanted the surgery.

Kingman also unveiled a new piece of machinery the office has purchased known as Exilis. The treatment works by heating up fat cells through the skin by emitting radio waves while cooling the skin. The tool “basically massages” the patient and takes approximately 15 minutes to complete a treatment. Kingman said a typical case takes four treatments to complete but the patient can go directly to work following the appointment.

While the results are not as dramatic as full-fledged surgery, the treatment is a mild, non-invasive solution for people who have problem areas but do not want an expensive surgery. One treatment of Exilis costs $400.

Some of the areas the practice can operate on are the neck, ears, eyes, breasts, stomach and thighs.

Kingman and Forsyth Plastic Surgery are located in Winston-Salem and do their surgeries there. He said follow-up appointments could be at Hugh Chatham. He visits Hugh Chatham on Wednesdays and occasionally will do simple operations here, but more intensive surgeries are done in Winston-Salem.
