MOUNT AIRY — Dakota Goss ran wild as North Surry muscled its way past Elkin 31-6 to earn its first win of the season.

The senior running back finished with 25 carries for 310 yards and two touchdowns on Friday night at Charles Atkins Stadium.

North (1-1) went 68 yards in seven plays on an opening drive that included a big run from Goss and a pass interference call against the Buckin’ Elks. Senior quarterback Nolan Stanley hooked up with Colton Acord on a 23-yard touchdown pass with 8:19 left in the first quarter. Hector Zuvieta’s extra point made it 7-0 Greyhounds.

Elkin had a nice kick return to start their first possession, but ran into a brick wall defense and went three-and-out on its first possession.

The Greyhounds unleashed the NCPreps preseason all-state selection on the Buckin’ Elks on their next possession. Goss carried the ball five times on a six-play, 66-yard scoring drive that ended with Goss scoring from one yard out.

Elkin picked up a first down and got close to midfield, but running back Jamiles Hayes was stuffed by Nick Huff and Ty Harold for a big loss on second down. Then on third down, athletic quarterback Josh Strickland threw to Hayes under heavy pressure from Goss. Hayes was drilled by Acord for another big loss.

North had a 75-yard touchdown pass from Stanley to Tanner Hodgin called back on a holding penalty, one of several flags on both teams in the game. Zuvieta had a short field goal blocked in the second quarter.

Elkin’s best first-half scoring chance came midway through the second quarter. The Buckin’ Elks (0-2) had a second and goal at the Greyhounds’ 12-yard line, but Acord stepped in front of a Strickland throw and came away with the interception inside the 5. Hodgin had an interception in the second quarter also.

Goss got outstanding blocking from his offensive line, and also got a ton of yards after contact. He had 191 yards at halftime.

Stanley completed a short screen pass to Casey Hull, who picked up 28 yards, but North’s drive stalled in the red zone.

In the third, Elkin got its only points of the game on a short pass from Strickland to Hayes, that turned into an 81-yard scoring play and cut the Hounds’ lead to 14-6.

North answered right back with a 40-yard kick return from Acord to set up another score. Goss had a 26-yard run, and Kandon Wilson hauled in a pass from Stanley. Goss scored his second rushing touchdown of the game to make it 21-6.

Stanley added a touchdown run in the fourth and Zuvieta split the uprights on a 23-yard field goal late.

North Surry has won five in a row against Elkin, who play their first home game Sept. 12 against Surry Central.
