SMITHFIELD — The Wilkes County American Coach Pitch Baseball team traveled to Smithfield for the Tar Heel League state tournament at Smithfield Community Park. The team fought an exciting battle and came home with the runner-up trophy.
During the tournament, Wilkes overcame Dare County, Johnson County, and Cleveland American on Thursday and Friday. Saturday, Wilkes lost to Wendell by one run and fell into the loser’s bracket. On Sunday morning, Wilkes came back to defeat Wendell in the semifinal championship round. In the final round Wilkes lost to Wendell, earning second place.
