RONDA — Seventy-three basketball players, from rising third-graders through rising ninth-graders, participated in the first day of the Cardinal Basketball Camp at East Wilkes High School.
“We figured it would be about 70,” East Wilkes women’s coach Matt Campbell said. “It’s a good thing.”
The Cardinal Camp was for both boys and girls.
“This is the best camp as far as numbers-wise,” East Wilkes athletic director and men’s coach Justin Call said. “This is the first time we’ve had them together.”
It is Call’s ninth year of running a summer camp. It is Campbell’s second.
“I like the fact that we’re bringing them together,” Call said. “We get to see and know all the kids.”
Call said he enjoyed having both staffs together and seeing the camaraderie.
Call also liked the number of youth who were from other areas. “When we do a youth camp, it’s for everybody,” he said. “It’s about basketball. It’s about having fun with the game.”
Annie Walker, a 10-year-old from Wilkesboro, was one of the campers from outside the East Wilkes area. And she said she was having fun. She said she liked “that you get a chance to do what you want with all the stations. I like shooting.”
Campbell, who was obviously having a good time, said “I just enjoy working with the kids you know from the classroom in a camp environment,” Campbell said, “and hope they take away some basic fundamentals and skills.”
The camp concludes Thursday.
