CARY — Members of the Surry Starfish recently competed in the Special Olympics Summer Games held at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary. The two day meet featured more than 300 athletes from counties around North Carolina.
“All of our athletes had an outstanding meet,” said Starfish coach Cathy Cloukey. “It was an exciting event and they proudly represented Surry County.”
Individually for Surry, Chance Casstevens took silver in the 25-yard backstroke while finishing fourth in the 25-yard freestyle and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle. Katie Gibson took home two gold medals with first-place finishes in the 10-yard unassisted swim and 25-yard flotation swim. Jacob Groff captured a silver medal in the 100-yard freestyle while adding bronze medals in the 50-yard freestyle and 50-yard breaststroke. Teammate Michael Henderson took silver in the 25-yard freestyle and seventh in the 50-yard freestyle.
Team captain Neil Joyner added to the Starfish medal total with a silver in the 25-yard backstroke and bronze in the 25-yard freestyle while adding a sixth-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Jill Kelley finished fourth in the 25-yard freestyle, fifth in the 50-yard backstroke, and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle. Teammate Betty Lawson added gold medals in the 25-yard and 50-yard backstroke along with a fourth-place finish in the 25-yard freestyle.
Surry’s Timmy Lunsford turned in an outstanding meet finishing with three gold medals in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard freestyle events. John Marion added two gold medals in the 10-yard unassisted swim and 25-yard flotation swim before earning a silver in the 15-meter walk event. Hiatt Nester contributed to the Starfish medal tally by earning gold in the 25-yard freestyle and 25-yard backstroke while also taking silver in the 50-yard freestyle.
Travis Powell captured a gold medal in the 50-yard freestyle while adding a silver medal in the 25-yard backstroke and sixth-place finish in the 25-yard freestyle. Surry’s Jason Reynolds took home gold in the 15-meter walk. Teammate Tabitha Reynolds won gold in the 25-yard backstroke and silver in the 25-yard freestyle. Jacob Tilley also had an eventful meet with gold medals in the 50-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle; and a silver medal in the 50-yard freestyle.
In addition, the Starfish had a strong showing in the 100-yard freestyle relay with the team of Chance Casstevens, Neil Joyner, Hiatt Nester and Travis Powell taking the bronze medal, while the team of Jacob Groff, Michael Henderson, Timmy Lunsford and Jacob Tilley captured the gold medal.
“Our team members really performed well and had a tremendous meet,” added Cloukey.
