Elkin softball went from winning two games in 2012; to eight games in 2013; and to 16 games in 2014.
The Lady Elks have gone from never having won a playoff game before 2013; to winning a playoff game in 2013; and to winning two playoff games in 2014.
“It’s been a great ride,” Elkin Coach Steve Shaw said. “I have to thank every one of them. They’ve raised the bar so high for Elkin softball.”
Elkin has righted and steadied the ship behind seniors Cayley Shoemaker, Bethany Turner, Kaitlyn Faw and Sarah Cudd.
“We’re going to miss Cayley on the mound and Bethany behind the plate,” Shaw said. “Both positions have big shoes to fill.
“But we’ll have talent coming out next year.”
Cudd has been the starting rightfielder for Elkin for four years. Faw, who has been solid defensively, has shared third base with Mattie Blackburn this season.
“There’s going to be a lot of work to do for next year,” Shaw said. “We’re going to miss those four seniors.
“I’m glad to have a chance to coach all these girls,” Shaw continued. “They’ve been just phenomenal.
“They wanted to make a run at the conference. They wanted make a run at the state. We ended the season acccomplishing those goals.”
