RONDA — East Wilkes’ Melia Higgins and Brooke Schubart, both sophomores, were named to the Mountain Valley Athletic all-conference team.
Higgins, a striker, and Schubart, a midfielder, led the team to an 8-12-1 mark that included a 2-0 1A West first-round win over Cherokee.
“After riding five-plus hours on a bus and to play at the high level they did,” Campbell said with a smile. “It was one of our better defensive games.
“It shows what these young ladies are capable of doing.”
The season ended at Elkin May 16 with a 3-0 loss.
The East Wilkes crowd was particularly impressive at Elkin. Spirited and raucous, they stayed in until the bitter end of the 3-0 loss.
“They’ve been great all year long,” Campbell said. “That’s why I like coaching at East Wilkes. We’re just one big family.”
The Cardinals achieved their preseason goal of reaching the playoffs and a little more. “Everybody wants to play for a state championship,” Campbell said. “Our goal was to get to the playoffs; then win one; and then play as long as we could.”
Cardinals Katie Huffman and Destiny Gregory earned MVAC honorable mention.
