DANBURY — Kody King scored in four events and Jacob Parker and Brandon Welborn scored in two as the Elkin men claimed second out of 20 teams at Saturday’s 1A Midwest Regional meet at North Stokes.

“Everybody performed at a really high level,” Elkin distance coach Dan Merritt said. “They responded.”

King won the long jump, triple jump, and joined Jamiles Hayes, Haji McDaniel and Welborn to win the 4x400-meter relay. Parker won the 3,200 and finished second in the 1,600. Welborn also took second in the 800.

The top four in each event qualified for Friday’s state track and field championships at North Carolina A&T.

Elkin’s Shakai Ward won the 200 and 400 meters as the Elk women took fourth. Ward also qualified in the 100 meters and was on the qualifying 4x400-meter relay team.

Elkin’s Kelsey Nicholson won the 300-meter hurdles. Other Elks who qualified for the state meet and their event were Madeline Carter (3,200); the 4x400-meter relay team (Carrie Brown, Payton Nicholson, Kelsey Nicholson, and Ward); Makayla Dimmette (discus and high jump); and Laken Brown (shot put).

The Starmount women, led by Hunter Welborn’s wins in the high jump and triple jump and Samantha Welborn’s wins in the shot put and discus, finished fifth. Also qualifying for the Starmount women were Emma Sizemore in the pole vault; and the 4x100- and 4x200-meter relay teams both comprised by Hunter Welborn, Sizemore, Jennifer Johnson, and Laken Steelman.

The Starmount men also finished fifth, led by Jake Matthews and Josh Houser. Matthews won the high jump; was third in the long jump; and was on the 4x100-meter relay team that finished third with Austin Hicks, Logan Styers, and Xavier Davis. Houser won the discus and finished third in the shot put.

East Wilkes’ Jathan Sales won the 110-meter hurdles. Also qualifying for states from East Wilkes were Kyle Rhodes and Will Jolly in the 3,200; Phillip Hemric in the 1,600; and Diamond Hayes in the shot put.

The Elkin women’s 4x800-meter relay team, comprised of Brown, Kelsey and Payton Nicholson, and Carter, ran its fastest time of the year — 10:33.54 — but was disqualified. The disqualification was appealed but the appeal was unsuccessful.
