East Wilkes Coach Aaron Simmons said Tuesday’s first-round matchup with Mount Airy is a good one for his Cardinals.

The two teams already have met twice this season with the Granite Bears prevailing 9-0 in early March and and then again in miud-season, 6-3.

“We were 3-3 after singles and in our No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches,” Simmons said of the second meeting. “I think it’s a neat opponent. It’s a measuring stick to see how far our team’s come.”

The East Wilkes lineup will be bolstered by freshman Joah Logan who returned four weeks ago after sustaining a partial ACL tear in December.

Logan won the exhibition portion of the MVAC tournament Wednesday, knocking off Reid Turner in the finals, 6-4. It was his fourth set of singles tennis of the day.

“We’ve known for a long time he was very talented,” Simmons said. “He’s been playing No. 3 doubles. He has wins against Elkin and Wilkes Central.

“We’re really excited about what kind of player he is going to be for us.”
