NEW BERN — Surry Community College’s golf team has qualified for the national junior college tournament with a strong showing at the Region X Championship.
The men’s team finished second with four players in the top 10. The women’s duo of Kasie Tolbert and Gatlin Hiatt each placed in the top six.
Coach Tom Pendergraft said he was very proud of his team. The men have qualified for the national tournament in Plymouth, Ind., May 18-22, while the women will take part in the national tournament in Daytona, Fla., May 11-15.
All six members of the men’s team placed in the top 20, although just the top four counted for the team total.
Chandler White shot 70 and 71 over the two days for 141 and the medalist honor.
McKinley Johnson shot 75 and 74 to tie for fourth place. Ryan Wilson shot 80 and 73 for seventh place. Matthew Snow tied for 10th with a 77 and 78.
Those four scores gave the Knights a team total of 598, just 12 strokes behind Sandhills Community College for the team title.
Ryan High finished 13th with a 156, and Dalton Berry was 16th with a 161.
On the women’s side, SCC’s Tolbert shot 82 and 89 for a 171. She was in first place after the first day, but a tough second round dropped her to second place behind Eric Clinard, Sandhills.
Sandhills’ Raven Brown and Central Carolina’s Lacy Tripp tied for third at 179, then Ashley Rogers of Spartanburg Methodist was fifth at 193.
Hiatt was a shot behind in fifth place with a 194 after shooting 96 and 98.
