Altemueller, Shinkle shine as Elkin wins

Will Altemueller threw a one-hitter and Drew Shinkle nearly hit for the cycle as host Elkin defeated Ashe County, 9-2, in a Mountain Valley Athletic Conference game Wednesday night.


“He hit the strike zone all night long,” Elkin Coach Steve Martin said. “He was mowing them down.”


Altemueller finished with 12 strikeouts.


Shinkle finished his night with a home run, two doubles and a single. He came within a play at third base — trying to stretch a double into a triple — of a cycle. Shinkle as two home runs, three doubles and a single in his last two games.


“He hit the ball well,” Martin said of Shinkle. “Everybody in the lineup hit. We put the ball in play tonight.”


Altemueller helped his cause with a hit and an RBI.


The nine runs and the 12 hits were season highs for Elkin, who went into Thursday night’s game at Alleghany 3-11 overall and 3-7 in the conference.


The nine runs marked the second straight game the Buckin’ Elks have reached their season high in runs. They scored six Saturday in an 11-6 loss to Mount Airy.

Elkin 13, Ashe County 2, 5 inn.: In Elkin, Cayley Shoemaker had a strong day on the mound and at the plate as the Lady Elks defeated the Huskies.

Shoemaker allowed just two hits, no earned runs, walked one and struck out seven in her five innings of work. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate.

Three RBI in the first two innings by Rebekah Cranford helped stake Elkin take the early 5-0 lead.

After the Huskies cut it to 5-2 in the top half of the third, the Lady Elks responded with four of their own in the bottom of the third. Victoria Kiger’s RBI double highlighted the outburst.

With the win, Elkin improved to 10-5.
