MOUNT AIRY — Seth Brim and Cody Ashburn combined on a two-hit, five-inning shutout as East Surry defeated East Wilkes, 14-0, in the second game of the ALS Benefit in Memory of Craig Hunter event at Mount Airy High School Saturday.
Brim threw 37 pitches, allowing one hit, walking none, and striking out four through three innings. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
Tyler Marion added four RBI with two hits and a sacrifice fly.
“They may be the best team in the state,” East Wilkes Coach Todd Welborn said. “They hit. They’re just a better team than we are.”
Welborn found several positives in Saturday’s loss. “Will (Jolly) pitched well,” Welborn said. “He kept it down; got some ground balls. We’re pleased.”
Welborn was also pleased with the diving catch Zach West made on a sinking liner in centerfield to end the first inning. Welborn also liked what he saw from Andrew Nance in leftfield.
Jathan Sales and Austin Pearson both made solid contact in their respective plate appearances. “Jathan never played before,” Welborn said. “There are things we can take from this.”
East Surry improved to 16-0. East Wilkes fell to 4-12.
“This is my 40th year,” East Surry Coach Barry Hall said, “and I’ve never had a team get off to this start.
“We’re just on a roll right now. Unless I mess them up, they’re going to be all right.”
While Saturday was about baseball, it wasn’t just baseball. East Surry wore shirts with “In Memory of Craig Hunter” on the back. Hunter, a long-time county commissioner who suffered from ALS, died January 13, 2014.
“That’s why we started it,” Hall said. “We’re trying to carry it on. It’s a great honor to play in it.”
“We want to help,” Welborn said. “We’ll come back next year. We’re more than happy to be a part of this.”
