SPARTA — Cyclists can mark their calendars for the fourth annual Tour de Mountains bicycle classic, held June 7 in Sparta.

The optional 30-, 35-, 66- (metric century) and 100-mile routes wind through the valleys, along ridges and through the pastoral landscape of Blue Ridge Mountains. Portions of some routes cross into Grayson County, Va., as riders follow the New River. All riders will experience challenging climbs and spectacular views.

Event details, applications and other information, are available at www.tourdemountains.com or by calling 336-372-2944. All routes follow paved roads that are suitable for road bikes. Wide-tire, off-road bicycles are not necessary or advised. Funds raised by the ride go toward purchasing more exercise equipment for the Alleghany Wellness Center, ride sponsor.

Riders will leave the Alleghany Wellness Center, 508 Collins Road, Sparta, at 8:30 a.m. SAG support and rest stops every 10 to 15 miles will be provided. Early registration by May 1 is $30, advance registration is $35, and registration the day of the ride is $40. On the day of the ride check in and/or registration begins at 7 a.m. T-shirts are available for riders as long as they last, so register early to assure a T-shirt. The impetus and planning for the ride has come from the center’s spin class led by Leigh Kostoryz, now in its 10th year.

Participants are cautioned that while this is intended to be a ride not a race, any ride in these mountains is challenging, regardless of the distance. Riders should contact a physician if they have any question about whether their physical conditioning is adequate for such a challenge.
