Cassie Burdiss scored twice in the second half as West Wilkes defeated host Elkin, 3-1, in a Mountain Valley Athletic Conference game Friday.
Makayla Dimmette put the Lady Elks on the board and in the lead with a penalty kick with 15:32 to play in the first half.
West Wilkes answered when Amanda Limon buried a penalty kick with 8:14 left in the first half.
“This was our first conference loss,” Elkin Coach Heath Foster said. “We needed to stay on top.
“That was a well-deserved win,” he continued. “No. 40 (Burdiss) killed us with her speed. We let her turn the corner two or three times.”
Shots were 7-3 in favor of the Blackhawks. The Lady Elks held the edge in corner kicks, 8-6.
Cheyenne Moses had five saves in net for Elkin, while Janae Zacharias had two for West Wilkes.
“We struggle finishing,” Foster said. “Finishing, conditioning, and toughness; especially mental toughness.”
Elkin is now 7-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference. West Wilkes improves to 8-4 and 5-2.
The Lady Elks host Ashe County Tuesday. Friday’s game at Alleghany has been moved to Thursday.
