BOONVILLE — West Wilkes claimed both the men’s and the women’s team titles at a four-team track and field meet at Starmount Thursday.

The Blackhawks ran away with it on the men’s side, scoring 113 points, followed by Starmount (64) and Elkin (56).

On the women’s side, West Wilkes scored 78 points, while Elkin had 70 and Starmount had 62.

The meet was held under clear skies and a temperature nudging 80.

“Overall, I was pretty pleased with the results,” Starmount coach David Oliver said. “West Wilkes is pretty tough.”

Oliver was particularly impressed with Trey Lomax’s 16.66 in the 110-meter hurdles. It was a personal best for Lomax. “He just keeps getting better and better,”Oliver said.

Lomax also went eight feet, six inches in his first pole vault competition.

“We’ve had several regional qualifiers,” Elkin coach Scott Wood said. “The kids worked hard and they’re performing. They’re on schedule.”

With Jacob Parker winning the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and Brandon Welborn winning the 800-meter run, the Buckin’ Elks swept the distance events.

“They are responding to the competition,” Elkin distance coach Dan Merritt said. “They’re bringing it up. They just upped it to another level today.

“About everyone who’s run has qualified for regionals today.”

Elkin’s Shakai Ward swept the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes. Ward is the reigning indoor champion at 300 meters. Merritt said the first goal for Ward was to get her 400 time “under 56.” But then he corrected himself and said, “No, her first goal is to win state.”

Ward ran a 58.06 in the 400, however the 25.62 she posted in the 200 was a personal best. She was the only three-event individual winner Thursday.

Starmount had three athletes who won two events: Hunter Welborn (high jump and triple jump); Samantha Welborn (shot put and discus); and Josh Houser (shot put and discus.)

Starmount is home again Thursday for their next meet. Elkin also hosts a meet Thursday.
