BOONVILLE — “We’re pretty young,” first-year Starmount Coach Sarah Boles said of her Rams when considering the young season.

“We’ve tried to work on mechanics and the fundamentals. And we’ve played some pretty stiff competition right off the bat.”

The Rams feature one senior and four juniors in their starting lineup. They are 2-5 headed into games at Alleghany Tuesday and at home with Forbush Wednesday.

While assessing her team, Boles mentioned two strengths: attitude and hitting. She said even when they were falling behind North Wilkes recently 9-0 and 11-4, her team didn’t give up.

The Rams rallied for a 17-15 win. “They kept chipping away at it,” Boles said. “Attitude was a big part of it.”

Boles said she doesn’t want her team to think it has arrived at the plate. While hitting is a strength, she thinks the hitting will improve. Boles also said “every batter in out lineup” is a threat.

Boles said she would like to see her team work on mindset. “Fundamentals is a big part of it,” she said. “Thinking ahead to the next play.

“They’ve really shown improvement the last few games.”
