Bethany Turner drove in five runs and Cayley Shoemaker battled out of several jams as the Lady Elks defeated Alleghany, 8-2, at Crater Park Monday afternoon.

Turner drove in her first two with a home run that easily cleared the fence in left-centerfield. Elkin assistant coach Steve Shaw said Turner told him “that’s for you and your daughter” after the first-inning blast.

Shaw said his “daughter’s mother” — Jennifer Shaw died Sunday. “It’s an emotional game for me today,” he said. Shaw said his daughter, Aspen, chose to play for her middle school team Monday. “She said that’s what Momma would want her to do,” Shaw said.

Shaw, saying it was too personal and choking back tears, would not elaborate further on the situation.

Shaw said Turner “has put the time in with the bat. That’s why she’s the captain. She hasn’t been all-conference, but she’s proving where she should have been all along.

“She’s what leadership’s all about.”

Shoemaker allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out eight. Only one run was earned.

Shaw said Shoemaker’s ability on the mound “goes with the years of experience. She’s been doing it since she was 5 years old.

“I’m proud of all the girls. They’re coming around.”

Shoemaker also had three hits and scored three runs. Kirstan Beaver had two hits, scored twice, and drove in a run for Elkin. Rebekah Cranford added two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI for the Lady Elks.

Madison Orton had two hits and drove in a run for the Trojans. Kayla Wilkes and Jenna Eisner also had two hits for the Trojans.

Elkin hosts Surry Central today.
