RONDA — Brandi Parks fired a no-hitter, striking out 14, as East Wilkes buried Alleghany, 10-0, in a Mountain Valley Athletic Conference game Friday night.

The Cardinals broke open a scoreless tie with a seven-run fourth inning. Kennedy Lester led off with a single; Olivia Bullard reached on a bunt single; and Caitlin Macemore reached on an error to load the bases. Parks then followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly - the first of her two RBI.

Taylor Tharpe then bunted everyone along to make it 2-0. Molly McCollum followed with another bunt to make it 3-0. After Ali Sparks singled to make it 4-0, Ashley Wagoner stroked a bases-clearing triple to make it 7-0.

Wagoner had a big hand in the game-ending runs. After Sparks reached on a one-out bunt single to score Sparks, Wagoner tripled to score Sparks. Wagoner then scored on Adrian Pardue’s crisp single to end the game.

Parks struck out 11 out of the first 12 batters she faced. She also faced the minimum - 18 - over six innings. She walked a batter who was subsequently picked off.

“Brandi was very good in the circle,” East Wilkes Coach Bradley Hayes said. “She did a good job keeping their hitters off balance.

“Her and Caitlin (who caught) called their own game. I didn’t say anything to the girls.”

For three innings, the game looked like it was heading for a 1-0 or 2-1 finish.

“They did a great job of taking us out of our game,” Hayes said. “Kennedy came through with a blooper in the fourth. It kind of unleashed our bats.

“Give credit to [Alleghany]. We haven’t seen some of the shifts they put on before.”

East Wilkes is now 3-0; 2-0 in the conference. “You got to be happy with that,” Hayes said. “But there’s still a lot of early season stuff to clean up.”

Alleghany, who scored 33 runs in their first two games, fell to 2-1.

“We held out own until the fourth inning,” Alleghany Coach Kristen Carpenter said. “They played a heck of a ballgame.

“I told them on the bus to just play like we played the last two games.

“Their (East Wilkes) defense was perfect. Brandi Parks is a great pitcher and that’s a great ball team.”
