RONDA — East Wilkes committed nine errors on defense and struck out 12 times at the plate in an 11-0 loss to Walkertown at Mastin Field Friday night.

“Just an ugly, ugly ball game,” East Wilkes Coach Todd Welborn said. “We made nine errors. Ain’t a team we can beat in the state unless they make 15.”

Welborn said there was nothing to take out of the loss to the Wolfpack. “I hope I wake up in the morning and don’t remember anything from seven o’clock on,” he said.

Zach Crabb started for the Cardinals, going four innings, allowing five hits, four runs, two earned, walking three, and striking out three. He threw 73 pitches.

Will Jolly threw the last three innings, allowing six hits, seven runs, three earned, walking none, and striking out none.

Jake McCoy went 2-for-2 with a walk for East Wilkes.

“It was a really good fundamental game for us,” Walkertown Coach Bobby Smith said. “Probably our best game.

“Defensively we played pretty well and we scored six or seven runs with two outs.”

Chris Holder went the first five innings for Walkertown, allowing two hits, walking three, and striking out seven. “He was lights out,” Smith said. “He’s got filthy stuff.”

After Walkertown scored two in the top of the first, East Wilkes had a chance to score in their half of the first. But a base-running gaffe cost them a bases-loaded situation with Will Jolly coming to the plate.

“That really helped us momentum-wise,” Smith said.

With the score 4-0 the Cardinals put two on with one out in the fourth, but they couldn’t push a run across. The Cardinals loaded the bases in the sixth, but came up empty again.

“Things went against them tonight,” Smith said. “That’s baseball. They get one or two runs and they’re back in the game.”

East Wilkes was at Walkertown Saturday. The Cardinals are at West Wilkes Tuesday.
