Scott Meredith struck out 11 in five innings and Alec Wilson drove in three runs with a home run and a double as visiting East Surry defeated Elkin, 7-1, Monday night.
Sophomore Will Altemueller had a solid outing for Elkin, going five innings, throwing 78 pitches, allowing seven hits, four runs, walking three, and striking out six.
But 35 of those pitches came in the fourth inning. Tyler Marion turned a pitch inside out and drove it for a crisp double to start the Cardinal fourth. Wilson then followed with a home run on a pitch Altemueller left up and over the plate.
“We just made a mistake,” Elkin Coach Steve Martin said. “He missed a spot.
“Other than that he was all right.”
Two walks, two singles and a hit batsman led to two more runs and East Surry was up 4-1.
“They’re always good,” Martin said of East Surry. “They always have fundamentally sound baseball teams.”
The Buckin’ Elks picked up their run in the first inning. Drew Shinkle reached on a one-out single and Daniel Brinegar followed with an RBI double.
Elkin would manage only one more hit — a single by Tanner Edwards in the fourth.
After the Brinegar double, Meredith settled down and retired nine in a row before the hit by Edwards.
“He did a good job for us tonight,” East Surry Coach Barry Hall said. “He’s just a winner. It was typical Scott.”
“We couldn’t lay off the high stuff,” Martin said.
This is Meredith’s third season as a varsity player at East Surry.
“I’m impressed with his team,” Hall said of Elkin. “They’re going to be good. Their pitchers were good.”
Elkin, 0-2, hosted Bishop McGuinness yesterday. The Buckin’ Elks host West Stokes Thursday. East Surry improved to 2-0.
