Several games have been postponed or canceled due to the latest round of weather. The forecast for Thursday may force more postponements or cancellations.
Monday, Surry Central was to play baseball at Elkin; East Wilkes was to play baseball at North Stokes; South Stokes was to play Elkin in girls soccer; and Starmount was to travel to North Surry for girls soccer. None of those games were played due to icy conditions.
On Monday, decisions to move the baseball scheduled at Forbush Tuesday has been moved to today. Forbush will host Starmount at 4 p.m.
Softball at Forbush changes as follows: the West Forsyth game, originally scheduled for Thursday, is moving to Wednesday at 5 p.m. The East Surry game, originally scheduled for Tuesday, will probably move to Friday, Forbush Athletic Director Burl Love said Monday. Both of those games are scheduled to be played at Forbush.
“This is typical baseball weather,” East Wilkes Coach Todd Welborn said. “We should be used to it. It’s cold in February and March.
“Last year was the coldest I can remember. It went on so long. It was windy. Every time we played it was cold and the wind was blowing.”
Rocky Horton, the throwing coach for for track and field at Starmount, said the team was outside finally “last Thursday and Friday” for the first time since practice began in mid-February. He said they expected to be outside again yesterday. “We may be behind,” he added.
It isn’t weather-related but East Wilkes will host Walkertown for baseball Saturday. The games were to be played at Walkertown, but were moved to Ronda to accommodate East Wilkes, who has several players taking the SAT in Wilkesboro Saturday morning. The JV game will begin at 1 p.m., with the varsity to follow.
The forecast for Elkin calls for a high of 55 today and mostly cloudy. Thursday, the high of 43 is expected with a potential for wintry mix. Seasonal temperatures are forecast to return this weekend.
