NEWLAND - Miracle Walters scored 22 points and Makayla Dimmette added 13 points and 10 rebounds as No. 13 Elkin went on the road and took down No. 4 Avery County, 58-49, in a first-round 1A playoff game Monday night.
“Those four quarters I’ve been looking for,” Elkin Coach Derek Carter said, “they played them tonight. We put the whole game together.”
Kylie Thomas added 10 points for the Lady Elks. “She came off the bench and had a huge game,” Carter said. Madeline Carter had six points and Carrie Brown four.
Courtney Beals only had two points, but her defense on Laura Burlson was critical, Carter said. Burlson was held to 10 points.
“We did a good job defense tonight,” Carter said. “We knew they were solid on 3s and we only gave up two 3s tonight.
“We had a lot of energy. We hit our free throws.”
The Lady Elks were 17-for-22 at the line, including 10-for-12 down the stretch as the Vikings fouled late.
It was Carter’s first playoff win in his third year of coaching. The Lady Elks lost in his only other playoff appearance in 2012.
The Vikings were led by Bre Heaton and Kylie Polsgrove with 13 each.
Carter said Avery County was a classy host, providing food and drinks for Elkin after the game.
The Lady Elks will now visit No. 12 Rosman Wednesday. “Wherever that is,” Carter said, “that’s where we’re headed. I’m very excited for the girls.”
Rosman is southwest of Asheville, about 180 from Elkin High School.
