BOONVILLE - Starmount broke open a tight game in the second quarter as they rolled past visiting Queen’s Grant, 57-30, in a first-round 1-A playoff game.
The Rams led 13-12 before a 15-0 run gave them a 28-12 lead at the half. “Our defense really locked down,” Starmount Coach Rocky Horton said. “We pushed the ball up the floor and we did a good job of finding open teammates.”
James Ashley led the Rams with 13 points, while Gunner Cass added 11; Luke Shore 10; and Dalton Vestal eight.
The Stallions are led inside by six-foot-seven Patrick Tape’. Horton said his team was able to rebound by committee with five Rams totalling six or more rebounds: Trey Bryant (nine), Vestal (eight), Cass (eight), Ashley (six), and Shore (six).
“Everybody was fighting in there to get rebounds,” Horton said. The Rams had 43 rebounds as a team.
Starmount, the No. 3 seed, will host No. 6 East Surry Wednesday night. Game time is tentatively set at 7. East Surry defeated No. 11 Union Academy, 78-63, to advance.
Starmount, now 18-8, have won nine consecutive games.
The Stallions end their season at 11-13.
