RONDA -Rosman charged back from 17 points down in the first half to claim a 64-53 first-round 1A playoff win over host East Wilkes Monday night.

After East Wilkes had surrendered the led and the momentum; and even after falling behind by eight points with 2:47 to play in the third quarter, the Cardinals mounted a comeback fueled by three turnovers to tie it at 38 with 49 seconds left in the third.

But the Tigers began breaking the Cardinal press and turning their possessions into easy baskets to ease out to a 51-42 lead with 5:59 to play. Their biggest lead was 13 when they led 60-47 with 2:14 to play. The Cardinals cut it to 60-53 with 30.5 seconds left, but would come no closer.

“It just stinks at the end of the road, but I’m proud of this group,” East Wilkes Coach Matt Campbell said. “I thought our girls competed hard. I was pleased with the overall effort.

“Rosman’s a dang good team.

“They came in with a good game plan. We came in with a good game plan. I don’t know if I’d have done anything different.”

The loss ends the East Wilkes season at 14-12. “From where we came from - game one to now is remarkable,” Campbell said. “I’ve never coached a team who’s improved that much.”

The Tigers were led by Candace Petit and Callie Chappell who score 17 and 14 points, respectively.

“We weren’t focused,” Rosman Coach Ashley Barton said of the game’s start. “We weren’t here. We had to pick it up.”

Rosman, approximately 175 miles away, is located southwest of Asheville.

The Tigers have three fourth-year varsity seniors and one third-year varsity senior.”My seniors did a good job settling everything down,” Barton said.

It was Barton’s first playoff win in five years at Rosman.

Rosman will host Elkin Wednesday with game time to be determined.
