Wrestlers compete for a chance at states

ROBBINSVILLE — Several area wrestlers went into Sunday’s 1A Western regional competition at Robbinsville High School with an opportunity to move on to the state championships in Greensboro this coming weekend.
Five Rams wrestled Sunday with a shot at states. At 106 pounds, Starmount’s Jack McCormick went 2-1 Saturday, including a pin of Murphy’s Sarah Haynes and a loss in the semifinals to Robbinsville’s Irvin Portugal.
At 152, Starmount’s Austin Baucom advanced with a pin before losing to Alleghany’s Justin Todd.
At 170, Starmount’s Dalton Oliver took a 6-4 decision over Cherryville’s Colton Brittain and a 4-3 loss to Elkin’s Thomas Bartley.
At 182, Starmount’s Ian Fennell pinned Queen’s Grant’s Terry Andrew, but lost to Mitchell’s Tanner Buchanan by pin.
At 195, Starmount’s Garrett Stokes took a 3-2 decision over Robbinsville’s Creed Lovin and lost to Avery’s Ryan Sheppard, 3-1, in overtime.
For Elkin, Said Javier at 120 pounds and Bartley wrestled to reach states Sunday.
For East Wilkes, Derrick Woodie wrestled Sunday to reach states after losing in the semifinals Saturday at 145.
Also for East Wilkes, heavyweight Joseph Shumate wrestled in the finals Sunday.
