Snow and drizzle and the resulting ice have left behind a jumbled and condensed local sports calendar.
Three local regular-season basketball games will be made up Monday night, while regional wrestling tournaments are set for Saturday and Sunday now rather than Friday and Saturday.
Monday, the basketball calendar features East Wilkes at North Wilkes; Wilkes Central at Elkin; and Starmount at Alleghany. All those were moved back as a result of road conditions Friday that cancelled school and ultimately postponed the games. Conference tournaments, set to begin Monday, will now be pushed back.
The wrestling regionals at Robbinsville and Ashe County were set to begin at 2 p.m Saturday. Action on Sunday will resume at 1 p.m.
David Oliver, the Starmount wrestling coach, said his team was headed out “in four wheel drives” to make the four-hours-plus drive to Robbinsville at just before 1 p.m. Friday.
The Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association met via conference call Tuesday and approved a couple of changes that may help member schools with scheduling events during the current inclement weather, NCHSAA Associate Commissioner for Communications Rick Strunk announced in a press release last week.
High school sports competition is not allowed on Sunday as a rule and the committee hoped to avoid wrestling on Sunday altogether. But a five-match per day limitation coupled with time concerns made getting it all done on Saturday impossible.
The limit of three basketball games in a week has also been changed for this coming week. Teams will be allowed four in order for teams to get their regular season and their conference tournaments completed prior to seeding for the state playoffs.
