RONDA — Isaiah Osborne scored 24 points — 14 in the second quarter — as visiting Wilkes Central rallied from 13 points down to defeat East Wilkes, 63-50, in a Conference 6 matchup Monday night.

After six lead changes in the game’s first six minutes, East Wilkes scored 10 straight points to take a 22-11 lead just over a minute into the second quarter. When Dillon Gray picked off an errant Eagle pass and scored with 5:29 left in the first half, the Cardinals led 29-16.

“I think we came out with a lot of energy,” East Wilkes coach Justin Call said. “It was our last home game. We were shooting it well. I was proud of our effort early.

“We definitely weren’t shy tonight. We shot 61 times; 20 were 3s. It was a hot start we couldn’t maintain.”

After a Devan Bailey free throw cut it to 29-17, Osborne hit three 3s in less than three minutes as the Eagles crept to within five at 31-26. “Ten (Bailey) just got hot,” Call said. “We didn’t have hands in faces.”

After Zach Nixon hit his second 3 of the quarter for the Cardinals to make it 34-28, the Eagles scored the half’s last four points to trail by two.

Both teams struggled to score to start the third quarter. The Eagles led just 38-36 before Josh Gowan’s 3 with 2:11 to play in the quarter started an 11-3 run to put Wilkes Central up 49-39.

The Cardinals got back within six on baskets by Andrew Nance and Seth Longbottom to open the fourth, but they would get no closer.

Nance and Jathan Sales each had 13 to lead the Cardinals in scoring. Sales had 10 of his 13 in the first half. The last two of his 10 in the half came on a beautiful runner with 2:44 left to give the Cardinals a 31-23 lead. Sales also had a sky hook to close the scoring in the first quarter. That basket put the Cardinals up 18-11.

Call said the early success shooting the ball may have played a part in the poor shot selection later. “But we played hard,” he said. “I’m very pleased with our work on the boards.”

Chandler Bare had eight rebounds, while Nance and Clint Henderson each had seven.

The Cardinals were at Elkin Tuesday night and are at North Wilkes Friday night.
