East Wilkes girls come up big on senior night

RONDA – Jada McCrimmon scored 21 points and East Wilkes pressed Alleghany into 29 turnovers as the Cardinals eased to a 65-26 Mountain Valley win before a Senior Night crowd Friday.
“Overall, it was a good team effort,” East Wilkes coach Matt Campbell said. “It was special for our seniors. I’m glad to see them play hard. They’ve been contributing all year.”
The Cardinals acknowledged seniors Ashley Wagoner, Laken Pardue, ShaNisha White, Kennedy Lester, and Diamond Hayes before the contest.
“They bring a special element to every game, every practice,” Campbell said. “They will be greatly missed.”
The seniors scored 28 points Friday night, led by White with 12 and Lester with nine.
The Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the East Wilkes press began to take a toll. The game was tied at 6 before the Cardinals ran off 11 straight points highlighted by a McCrimmon 3. The Trojans committed turnovers on four straight possessions midway through the first quarter.
A jumper by McCrimmon finished a 23-1 run and put the Cardinals up 29-7 with 5:17 left in the half. During that seven-minute span, the Cardinals forced 11 turnovers.
“We’ve used it more and more as the season has gone on,” Campbell said of the press. “It helps us create tempo. It’s a big factor if we can get layups.
“Getting deflections and steals gets the game at a pace [the other team] is not used to playing. The girls have really bought into it and done a great job.”
McCrimmon’s 3-point play just before the half put the Cardinals up 40-18. The three points were the last of her 17 first-half points.
The Cardinals pushed the lead to 32 by the end of the third quarter and held their biggest lead, 64-22, with just under three minutes to play.
Faith Reeves led the Trojans with nine points. McKenzie Stokes also had nine for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals host Wilkes Central tonight. The Cardinals are at Elkin Tuesday and at North Wilkes Friday.
“We’re going to have to play well,” Campbell said. “We’ve got the top half of the conference left for the last three games. I know the girls are looking forward to it.”
