The Lady Elks defeated the Alleghany High School Trojans on Friday night with a final score of 64-35 and improving their record to 6-3 in the 2A/1A Mountain Valley conference with 10 wins and nine losses overall.

The Lady Trojans fall to 1-7 in conference and 2-14 overall.

The Lady Elks erupted in the first quarter to a 24-4 lead. By halftime, the score was 45-12 Lady Elks.

However, the Lady Elks struggled in the second half only scoring 19 points. Elkin barely clipped Alleghany in third-quarter scoring, and was outscored in the fourth quarter 13-6.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Elks did not score a basket until 5:24 remaining in the game. Elkin only scored six points in the quarter.

The lack of second-half offense was a concern to Coach Derek Carter for the Lady Elks.

“No, I am not happy with the second half. We had some kids in different roles though. They don’t normally play certain spots and they were given the play time. That’s how you learn, but we discussed what happened,” said Carter.

“Simply, we did not execute. I agree it takes four quarters to play at the level we must play at. That’s what we talked about in the locker room after the game. We have to execute. We changed our defense in the second half. We had to call a time out to calm down a bit and think it over,” said Carter.

Not producing for four quarters wasn’t limited to Elkin.

“You have to show up for four quarters in order to play,” said Coach Kerry Miller of Alleghany. “We are not a good shooting ball team. We struggle with that. We have been around 20 to 25 percent in shooting all season. Our defense is the name of the game.

“However, if we come out and lay an egg like we did in this one (the first half), we’re in trouble,” continued Miller. “We don’t have a go to person to step up. Regardless, tonight was a moral victory for us in the second half.”

According to Carter, Elkin is running neck and neck with West Wilkes for second place. The two teams will meet on Monday night at West Wilkes.

“Being out all week with no practice had me worried tonight. We got out early in this game. Something I have to worry about is overworking the kids though. It’s late in the season, we have three games coming up next week, and we have to get through it,” said Carter.

Despite the offensive challenges in the second half, Miracle Walters of the Lady Elks scored 18 points.

Madison Orton of Alleghany High School scored 10 points.
