BOONVILLE — The East Wilkes girls basketball team moved its conference record to 5-3 after defeating Starmount 46-27, though the Rams mounted a heavy comeback rally during Friday’s final quarter.
Lady Cardinal Jada McCrimmon led an offensive attack for East Wilkes for three quarters of the game and was high scorer, recording 17 points. The Cardinals’ second quarter offensive performance of 20 points in a spread-out scoring effort put them up 28-10 going into half time.
Cardinal Mckenzie Stokes put in two; Shanisha White four; Chelsea Edwards four; Kennedy Lester four; and McCrimmon, six points, to cap off the quarter. Their defense was merciless executing the half-court trap and efficient zone coverage.
Then, things totally changed in the fourth and the persistence under pressure over the season finally paid off for the young Lady Rams team.
In what Coach Mike Dodson described as the best minutes his team has put forth this season, the Lady Rams maneuvered a hard-core fourth-quarter defensive attack led mostly by Darion Dobson, but with all Rams hands held high in every Cardinal face. The Rams also moved on offense, scoring 14 total quarter points, with Dobson contributing eight.
The aggressive defensive package came complete with good double-teaming efforts, forced turnovers and in particular the ability to get the ball down court effectively and score. The Rams fourth-quarter push held McCrimmon scoreless and the Cardinals to only four points by the quarter’s end as the game concluded 46-27.
Coach Dodson said he told the team after calling a timeout with five minutes left to go in the fame to look around at their team members ranging from freshman to seniors. For them, win these minutes, Dodson told the team. It worked.
Dodson said the Rams outscored the Cardinals 8-0 and played the best ball he’d seen them play.
“Darion Dobson played the best game of the year on both sides of the ball. It felt good, we took some big steps.”
Dodson also said it was good to have Courtney Byrd back in the line-up.
East Wilkes Head Coach Matt Campbell said he believes in his team, sometimes more than they believe in themselves. “I thought definitely in spurts we were very good against Starmount and played good man-to-man coverage.”
Campbell said the Lady Cardinals played up the tempo as he wanted and it yielded good results. Depth is also a plus on the Cardinal team because all can contribute at given time, said Campbell.
